Currently about one-third of small businesses offer short-term and long-term disability insurance as part of their employee benefits package, according to an U.S. Small Businesses in 2000 report published by LIMRA. The survey also found that when a small business offers group disability insurance, it usually offers both types of coverage.

Employers may choose to share the cost of this benefit with their employees, yet in the LIMRA survey, two out of three employers who offer disability insurance pay the entire cost of the coverage.
